Cleveland Marathon Training, Week 2

Well, that went fast! Two weeks and 63 miles are now done. Wow, that's a lot of miles (to some of you, I know that's just another week or even less!) It was a great training week. I hit my goal paces, had a mid-week early morning run with a friend and fantastic group long run on Saturday. I even learned a few things about myself as a runner!

I ran my tempo miles on Monday and am really enjoying getting my speed workouts done at the beginning of the week!

My Thursday morning run with Jen was fantastic. She met me at my house and we set off at 4:45 am for 4-6 miles. We ran for just over five miles and our overall pace was 9:03. Running with Jen is really good for me as she is a faster runner, so I was challenged to go faster than I would have running alone. Hoping we can squeeze a few more early runs in together before she goes in for her foot surgery and will be off for a few months.

I wasn't sure if I was going to complete a recovery run on Sunday (maybe a rest day?), so Friday I thought I would get up and run my Sunday planned mileage on the treadmill. Well, Thursday night I was out a little bit later than I thought I would be at a friend's house for a Pampered Chef party and hit snooze a couple times. However, I finally did get up and run a few slow miles on the treadmill. I only had my music for this treadmill run (no children entertaining me, no movies to watch) and found out that I CAN DO IT! I didn't try to make any excuses, I didn't try to stop. Now, maybe this was because I only had time for 2.5 miles, but I'll take every little victory where I can get them!

Saturday morning, there were seven of us that met at 7:00am for various mileage at one of the metro parks. We had some run 4 miles and some run 12.  Group runs are so much fun; the miles simply fly by! It looks like our group will be growing as a few runners mentioned how much fun they had running with the group. Yay!!!

My recovery run on Sunday was definitely a learning day for me. I decided to go out "naked". No, I did not leave my clothes at home. A "naked run" for any non-runners,  is no Garmin, no music, no stopwatch. Just me and the pavement (plus clothes & shoes). It was such a liberating run! I have never run technology free and I think I will try doing this again. I only ran 2.5 miles though, so I don't know how long I could survive with my own thoughts, but I will try. I was trying to go slow since it was a recovery run, so anytime I felt myself speeding up, or could hear my breathing, I slowed down. When I got home and looked at the clock, I was surprised that I was back before I thought I would be. Makes me wonder if my watch and music hinder my running? Do I run slower because I have my numbers right in front of me? Does my brain get in the way of what my body can do? It will be interesting to experiment over the next couple weeks to see if it was just a fluke.

I just realized that I did NOT have a rest day last week. My body seems ok with that (so far), but I do not recommend it and will be making sure to have one this week!

Week 2 stats:

Monday: 5.25 miles, tempo run
Tuesday: Strength Training--Yes, I did it again!
Wednesday: 6 miles, mid-long run
Thursday: 5.18 miles
Friday: 2.5 miles on treadmill
Saturday: 12.12 miles
Sunday: 2.5 miles, recovery

Total for week 2: 33.76 miles

How is your training so far?

  1. great week 2!  keep this up, and cleveland will be a breeze!  :)  it is so much fun to have a group to run with.  i find it makes all the difference in the world!

  2. Thanks, Melanie! I feel like I'm getting spoiled with all the group runs. We'll see what happens when I have a long run on my own!

I love reading comments! Thank you for taking the time to leave one!
