Family running

The family that runs together...is happy! Or should that be busy? Maybe both?!  I am just so excited that I had to share our plans for "Marathon Weekend" as I am now calling it.

My race is Sunday, May 20 at 7:00am. Talking with my wonderful brother last week, he was able to find us a room for Friday and Saturday nights after I had spent an afternoon calling hotels. Four months before the race and several hotels were completely booked already! Talk about a stressful afternoon! (at that point, I wasn't even looking at the possibility of Friday night yet). I had been toying with the idea of going up on Friday since there is a VIP party for the Official Race Bloggers, but wasn't sure if I could convince the family to spend the whole weekend there. I was ok skipping the party. After getting a hotel for both nights (just in case), I started thinking about all the fun things that are right there that we can do. First, our hotel has an indoor pool. Instant hours of fun for the whole family. The Great Lakes Science Center is right there, along with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Rock Hall might not be fun for the kids, but again, LOTS of options.

After thinking of just those ideas, I realized The Rite Aid Cleveland 5K is Saturday morning and the Kids' Run is a couple hours later. The 5K starts by Browns' Stadium and actually ends INSIDE the stadium and it says "on the field"! For a life long Browns' fan like Jeff (please don't hold that against him, he's from the Cleveland area), it was too good to be true. He immediately said yes when I asked him if he wanted to run it. Signing Zachary up for the kids' run is also a no-brainer. He LOVES racing! And he will be even more excited that he will get his very own medal.

Since they are just plans, and we have 18 weeks until Marathon Weekend, I'm sure we will change our minds several times on what we will be doing that weekend. However, three out of the four of us will be racing, that much I do know! Jacob won't be racing, but that is only because he is not yet three. I'm sure he will start racing as soon as he is old enough! My only concern is not getting enough sleep for the 2 nights before the marathon. However, I don't get a lot of sleep now, so maybe I'll be used to it?!

Have you ever had a family race weekend? How did it go? Would you do it again?

  1. Cleveland will treat you very well all weekend long, I'm sure! If I can be of any help with suggestions, please let me know. Also, I'll be working on a blogger meetup at some time that weekend so even more fun to look forward to!

  2. Family runs are my specialty!  We haven't run together as a family since Thanksgiving and I'm missing it.............
You're going to have an amazing weekend!

  3. Just came across your blog... yay for a family race weekend! That sounds like so much fun.  My daughter and husband have come along on a few race trips, but my daughter is 2 and hasn't done any fun runs yet.  They make great spectators, though.  Yes- the sleep thing is a tricky one... I would just try to go to bed early the whole week before leaving, and don't sweat it if you have a few bad nights.  I'm debating doing a full later this spring, too... I look forward to following your training!

  4. Thanks, Alicia! We are definitely not strangers to the area, my husband is from the area and we have lots of family up there. Will definitely be picking your brain closer to the weekend for kid friendly restaurants within walking distance,  I am looking forward to meeting everyone!

  6. Thanks, Laura! I think you are definitely onto something there...lots of sleep the week leading up to it, then as much as I can the last two nights. I've read in the past that two nights before a race is the most important night for a good night's sleep, but I'm not going to let myself stress (too much!) about it.

  7. We will be having a lot of family members running this May.  Myself, my husband and one of our daughters will be coming up from Florida to run. (My first full and my husband and daughter will be doing the half)  My niece and her fiance are coming in from Texas to both run the half and my nephew is coming in from Milwaukee to run his first half.

We have also talked other family members who live in Cleveland (Lakewood) to sign up and participate in other events.  I have 3 sister in laws and 1 brother in law walking the 5K and one sister in law is also going to run the 10K. We are still trying to recruit other family member to join us :)

Since we live all over we have our own Facebook page that our family can post about their progress and/or just posts to keep everyone motivated and excited for the race weekend.

Last year a group of us did our first family running event at Disney and it was a great experience and since we all grew up in Cleveland we couldn't think of a better place to do another family running weekend!  I'm really excited to run my first full in the town where I grew up...just hoping the weather will be nice...
